Crocus Sativus
The Crocus Sativus, commonly known as saffron, belongs to the crocus family. It is a fall-blooming corm that goes dormant from mid-June to late August. This perennial plant thrives in hardiness zone 3B.
Saffron prefers to be planted before autumn in well-drained soil with full sun exposure. It blooms in October or November and continues to grow—even under snow—until late spring.
By the end of the growth cycle, the leaves dry out, and new saffron corms are ready. At this stage, they enter dormancy for most of the summer. The corms can either be left in the ground or dug up and stored in a hot, dry environment until the next planting season.
